Geology Fact - Did You Know?

This hot rock type takes its name from the latin, ignis, meaning fire.

When the first people saw lava exploding out of a volcano you can understand why they likened it to fire. Any rock that forms from molten rock is termed igneous.

As a rock melts at great depths under the Earth’s surface, it will

begin to rise (think of a hot air balloon) before eventually cooling down back into a rock. The nearby Mount Piper was formed when lava erupted from the Earth to make a volcano.

On the converse, Mount Disappointment formed in an underground chamber when magma cooled to form granite (as you might see in your kitchen countertop).
